The Story of Rapunzel Analytical Essay Review
For several years the story of Rapunzel has been read to children of all ages. Most of these children have come to love the story of the young girl trapped in a tower with very long beautiful blonde hair. Contrary to the thoughts of people in society, the Grimm Brother’s original tale of Rapunzel has a twisted moral, and subconsciously promotes the unseen factors of parenting and relationships to children all over the world.
The story of Rapunzel is a simple child's tale about a girl who lived in a tower. The parents of the girl gave her up because of the mother's craving for a type of lettuce called, "Rapunzel" (Grimm 489-490). Because of the mother's craving, the sorceress was given the beautiful baby girl to have as her own beloved child. The sorceress locked this child in the middle of nowhere, so she could not be found (Grimm 490). According to the Grimm Brothers, the sorceress would call out, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair for me" for when she needs to go up an see her (490). By the sorceress doing this almost everyday one young prince traveling through the woods caught on to this display of communication to get up in the tower to the point of him going up and seeing the princess. One day when Rapunzel heard this call of action to the sorceress in which she blurted out, "Mother Gothel, how is it that you are much heavier than the prince?" (Grimm 491). After this showing of stupidity on Rapunzel’s part bad things happened to her and the prince.
Many people who have read the tale of Rapunzel have concluded the fact that is a story appropriate for children to read. Those who agree with this traditional tale of Rapunzel may feel that the sorceress is mean because she takes the baby from the couple. They also feel that Rapunzel herself is the hero in this story. Lastly, they may feel that the prince is very brave when trying to rescue Rapunzel from the tower.
To start off with why this story should not be read to children has to do with the belief that the sorceress in the story is referred to as the bad person, but in fact the bad ones are her biological parents. The parents of Rapunzel are just worthless thieves who gave up their child. This may sound like a case in which DCFS sound be involved in. According to GoodTheraphy.org, “a need for one partner to control the other” can lead to abandonment of children in the future to come. In stating that someone can see that the abandonment of Rapunzel was due to her mother’s need to have her husband get the lettuce in which she craved while she was pregnant. Sense this abandonment of Rapunzel due to her parents action the sorceress becomes the good person not the bad. The sorceress gives Rapunzel a great life while keeping her away from all the troubles of society in the world.
Another reason in which people should stop this tale is that Rapunzel is not in fact the hero of this story as many may think. The fault in this accusation tends to come from the Disney version of this story. Because people tend to see her as they hero, they probably tend to look past the thought that she all along could have escaped from the tower. Rapunzel also does not even do anything to even gain a sense of heroism in the tale.
Another misunderstanding people make is that the prince is brave when climbing up the tower, which is a blunt understatement to what is most likely going on. Many people think he has bravery because he is saving Rapunzel, but he really does not save her at all. Most people overlook the fact that he is just out search for a girl to hookup with. This girl happens to be the beautiful Rapunzel. The comparison between Rapunzel and the prince is that both are not very bright when it comes to saving her. Because the two are not the brightest of people, one gets trapped in the swamp and the other ends up blinded.
